As a small-business owner, taking a vacation can seem like an impossible dream. Believe me when I say it doesn’t have to be this way. Everyone needs a break once in a while for their own physical and mental health. And with a bit of planning, your time off can be as beneficial for your business as it is for you.
Looking back over the years, I’ve realized that some of my best ideas have come to mind away from the office. Now, a yellow pad and pen are always stashed away in my suitcase when I go on vacation. That way, if any professional creativity busts loose I’m ready to jot down my ideas.
Make it a priority
In order to win, an EntreLeader should always establish business and personal goals. That includes taking some time off regularly. So whether you want to take the family on a 10-day cruise, or simply plan a few long weekends at the lake throughout the year, set your vacation goal. Make sure it’s specific, measurable and has a time limit. In addition, be certain it’s your goal and write it down!
Don’t hesitate to delegate
The best way to build a business that’s bigger than you is to delegate. You have to be able to trust your team members to demonstrate integrity and competency and to be able to hold down the fort while you’re away.
Make a list of tasks your team needs to accomplish before you leave. Then, meet with team members to make sure your instructions are clear. Appoint one person as your “go-to.” This team member will handle any problems that arise. Make sure you explain how and when that person should contact you in the event of an emergency — and make sure they understand what constitutes an emergency!
Relax and enjoy
Your vacation will be wasted if you spend the majority of your time worrying about the business. If you absolutely must have contact with the office while you’re away, schedule these times in advance and limit conversations to 10 minutes each.
The bottom line for your vacation time? Relax and have fun. If you've planned ahead and hired good people, the only worry should be whether or not you have enough sunscreen!
